After a great time up in the Adelaide Hills it was time to meander down to our first city on our big lap of Australia, Adelaide! It was a stark contrast from up in the hills, where you could see just how flat the Adelaide Plains were. Adelaide is known as the city of churches as back in the cities infancy, you could look out across the city and see St Peters Cathedral from basically anywhere, among other churches.
We couldn’t wait to get out and explore the city, Steph in particular loves cities, so off we went. It was Australia Day on our arrival, so there was fireworks planned for the evening, including a parade and free concert.
Whenever we go to a new destination we head straight in to the local information centre. Adelaide’s is right in the heart of Rundell Mall, so we got some info on how to get around and what we should see and do during our stay. We grabbed some lunch and then had plans to get out of the heat and inside a good family friendly free activity.
The boys were right into their fishing now, since we had some success in Rapid Bay along the Fleurieu Peninsula. They had their own pocket money, and were desparate to go and buy some rods. We headed in to the local BCF and loaded up! We should be set now for the rest of our trip when it comes to fishing and snorkelling. That blew the budget out just a little, even with the pocket money contributions from the boys.
There is a big river running through Adelaide known as the River Torrens. The boys were desparate to fish it, but they had to settle for a different kind of water activity whilst we were in Adelaide. The Paddle Boats were a lot of fun. It was right out front of the park where the parade, free concert and fireworks were to take place, so we were able to head up and check it out.
The parade went for about an hour, and was a celebration of the diversity of Australia on Australia Day. We walked down to grab our spot on the grass. Of course, this was a lead in to the big show as the sun set over the River Torrens.
The parade, the concert and the fireworks were amazing. The boys had a great time at their first rock concert, and fully enjoyed the solid 10 minutes of fireworks. The next day we were back in the city to check out the local library, museum and being the city of churches, perhaps one of Adelaide’s most well known churches, St Peters Cathedral.
Upon entry a guide came right up to us. We actually thought we may have accidentally been mistaken for someone else, as she gave us guides an info book then escorted us around. Turns out the Cathedral is frequently visited, and the volunteers take visitors through regularly.
It was a great day out, and our time in the city was fantastic. We stayed at Big 4 West Beach, which is a fantastic park with really high quality facilities. It is massive, probably the biggest park we have ever been too, but they cater for it with plenty of space and amenities to go around. It is right on the west facing beach so we had to go out and check out the sunset and the sand dunes.
After a long stay in Adelaide, we headed down the road to check out Port Adelaide. We stayed at Adelaide Shores, and to be honest it was super pokey and tight. But they had a great pool area, and even provided free bikes on site. We thought the best way to check out Port Adelaide was by bike.
Poor Harry had to have some tough love to get him cycling. He also had a small brake failure issue per the video. He survived!
We had a great time in Adelaide & then Port Adelaide, met some great people too, but it was time to get moving on to our next destination. Make sure you follow along on our adventures, checkout Instagram, Facebook and Youtube, search our username @todoingfamily
