What on earth is foot golf and can I really play with the family?
Our very first #todoing for 2018 was a trip to the Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links where the Todoing Family played a game of Foot Golf. Cardinia Beaconhills is a 27 hole golf course, of which 9 holes on the Lakeside course are set up to allow for foot golf. Located at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, Cardinia Beaconhills truly is a golf course set amoungst the trees, offering some great exercise with moderate hills over the foot golf course. Click on the icon in the map below and you can work out how long a drive this might be for you from your location or Melbourne.

This wasn’t some fun walk in the park. This game was on and highly competitive as with any family! Two sides were chosen, a soccer ball each. Justin teamed up with Harry and Alex, Stephanie with Jed. The least amount of kicks (shots) around the course was to win. Foot golf can be played like golf with each participant kicking their own ball, or into teams or other combinations like the various golf games you can play (Stableford, 4 ball best ball etc). All you need to wear is appropriate clothing for the weather, and some runners/sneakers.
The first hole was all down hill, so Jed got it started for Team Mum and Alex for Team Dad. Fair to say a kick the wrong way down the hill could end up with some work to do, which Team Mum was quick to learn! For the second foot golf hole we were accompanied by a family of Kangaroos who correctly decided to move on upon spying Harry’s apparent craziness/love for animals. In that order.
The day also happened to be Justin’s birthday, so Steph and the kids created a video celebrating both the foot golf and Justin’s birthday. We hope you like it:
Foot golf is a great activity for families, groups, couples or individuals. We really enjoyed it and it took us just over an hour and a half to get through 9 holes with the two teams. Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links also has a Bistro and Deck area to grab a bite to eat and a drink after the game. We packed a picnic lunch, followed by the cake(s!) you can see in the video above.
It was quite enjoyable seeing the competitive instincts coming our in our boys, in particular with Harry. He couldn’t quite work out why he had to wait so long for his turn each time (not only were we rotating turns to kick, but the team furtherest away from the hole always goes first). No matter the number of explanations this simply didn’t make sense to Harry. He got quite angry and at one point channeled that anger into a really long kick that actually went in. The look on his face was priceless, and after finishing celebrations he had to work hard to get back to his grumpy face again. 🙂
We share what we get up to on Instagram as the Todoingfamily, and here are some photos from the foot golf at Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links:
We will definitely be back for more foot golf. The kids seem old enough now to play on their own through the 9 holes, so next time it’s 5 balls and a lot of running around the course chasing! Should be fun. We think if you are going to go as individuals you would want your child to be at least 6 years old as there is a bit of kicking on the par 5’s! Anything younger and best to go teams for this one.
Thanks also to the kids for their addition to our video above, sharing their thoughts on their Dad. Happy Birthday Justin!
