Seaspray is a hidden jewel for families on the 90 Mile Beach!
The weather was hot and it was a great opportunity to get to the beach given it was the middle of the Victorian school holidays. The kids love the beach (a traditional Australian family getaway!) and we stayed at Beach Creek Cottage in Seaspray. This family home is 3 bedrooms, full kitchen, separate toilet and bathroom with all the mod-cons like Foxtel, WiFi and even an onsite playground.

Seaspray is a little known seaside town in Gippsland, situated on the 90 Mile Beach. It’s traditionally a family getaway with fishing, swimming and watersports opportunities, and local families have known all about it for generations (many still have family holiday homes there!). But with the urban sprawl accelerating from Melbourne, many families now take advantage of a 2 hour drive from the South Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne to get to a wonderful family swimming location. In addition to the beach, Seaspray is also home to Merriman Creek, which is a great spot for young children to swim.
Merriman Creek is also home to a lot of interesting wildlife, insects, fish and birds, and we were fortunate to learn all about them with the DELWP Gippsland crew which we share in our post ‘Exploring our creeks and waterways’.
Seaspray is quiet. There is a Caravan Park with a shop, which happened to be right across from where we were staying at Beach Creek Cottage. They sell gas, milk, bread, papers and lollies. All the essentials too you would expect at a caravan park shop or small milk bar. There is also a General Store, with a much bigger range, as well as a liquor shop and takeaway food. Finally, there is the Seaspray Surf Lifesaving Club which does meals and a bar throughout the day. The nearest town for shopping is Sale, which is 20 minutes drive away from Seaspray.
We had a great meal at the Surf Life Saving Club, entrée and dessert. They have an icecream bar and we couldn’t pass that up on a really hot day when it hit 40+ degrees!
Swimming was the go throughout the day. We were joined by quite a few families, but there is so much room for everyone that you can easily find your own sand and space. We set up between the surf and the creek, which meant throughout the day the kids could play in the creek and paddle on their boards and inflatable boats, but we could also walk over to the surf for some serious wave jumping!
Check out what we got up to in Seaspray in our video:
In the evenings, being close to the coast, the temperature tended to drop off. This was a welcome relief and meant it was the perfect opportunity for a walk along the beach. The 90 Mile Beach stretches from Port Albert through to Lakes Entrance. Being in Seaspray we were towards the middle. Each night we walked along the beach and it was always different. There was lots of shells and washed up sea creatures too!
Seaspray is a superb location for a family holiday. We had a lot of fun as a family and even had the Grandparents along for the ride. Take the bikes or scooters, as well as any kayaks, boats or boogie boards you or the kids might have. You’ll find plenty of locations to try them all out in a pretty quiet, clean and safe location.
