When we started out we were absolute caravan newbies. We had never owned a caravan or even a camper trailer. We’ve always stayed in cabins or camped in tents. When it came to levelling a caravan, well, we didn’t even know you had to do it!
Our caravan for our lap of Australia. It’s a Jayco Journey Outback 22.68-1
We’d seen friends and family get the level out, a large amount of back and forth, both verbally and with the tow vehicle! But we didn’t really appreciate just how important it is.
Without a level caravan, your water might not drain out of the shower, let alone the caravan itself. Doors might not close, or at least stay closed, and nothing really hurts more than a flying door going downhill to your forehead!
We got researching and found two items that we think are must haves and the absolute bees knees when it comes to levelling your caravan or camper trailer.
ITEM 1: The Ezylevel device
ITEM 2: Anderson Camper Leveller
The Ezylevel receiver unit which started in the car to give direct feedback to the driver on the state of level of the caravan.
Let’s talk about how we use these two great items to level our caravan on our lap of Australia and beyond.
The Ezylevel device comes with two parts, a transmitter and a receiver. The Transmitter is placed in your caravan and needs to be calibrated before using it (hello spirit level!). Calibration is a very simple process. Turn the transmitter unit to calibrate, get the caravan level ‘old school style’ and then turn the transmitter off from the calibrate mode. It’s very easy to do, but remember you must have the transmitter installed in a flat or vertical position, facing forward. This makes it easy to read the information the receiver unit reads. Get it wrong, and it all might be backwards or back to front! We installed ours on our overhead cupboards pointing forward.
The receiver unit is mobile so you can use it in the car as well as in your hand or magnetised to the draw bar during the levelling process. I keep this with me as we level the van.
The Anderson Camper Levelers are simple to use, and provide a slow gradient to drive up or reverse back on to level the caravan. Here we have used them with chocks to secure the caravan.
The Anderson Camper Leveller is generally used with two additional wheel chocks, and if you have a tandem trailer like we do, you will need two of these units which are sold separately. These are a great device with a smooth slope that you drive up or reverse back on to lift your caravan. They work for both single wheel caravans and dual or tandem caravans or camper trailers.
Here’s how you level your caravan like a pro!
Step 1: Have your partner turn on the transmitter unit in the caravan. You turn on the receiver unit whilst sitting in the car, and after a second you will see information on how the caravan looks in terms of level.
Step 2: Your first focus is on the ‘Lift Left’ or ‘Lift Right’ lights on the receiver unit. If you have a big site like we did in our video, you can drive around and sometimes get it right just on some flat ground or even some uneven ground with a lucky drop or rise. We got it lucky at Tailem Bend recently, despite all odds! More likely though, you will need to ask your partner to position the levelling ramps under the correct wheel or wheels, ready for you to drive up on.
Once you have a level caravan, after perhaps adjusting your jockey wheel, you will see a green light on the receiver unit. It’s magnatised too so you can just stick it on the draw bar for this process.
Step 3: Once the ramps are in place, drive up slowly and watch the receiver unit to get feedback on when the van is level. Once you have the left and right level, all that will flash is either the green light in the middle to indicate level, or the ‘Lower Front’ or ‘Lift Front’ lights. If it is green, you’re all set! If not, push on so you can adjust the front of the caravan using your jockey wheel.
Step 4: Disconnect your caravan or camper trailer and move the vehicle out of the way.
Step 5: Adjust the jockey wheel height in response to the information provided by the Ezylevel. If you weren’t level yet with a green light, you will need to either lift or lower the front of the van with the jockey wheel.
That’s it, you’ve levelled your caravan in just a minute or two, with no stress. Just like a professional!
We’ve been using this setup with our caravan and absolutely love it. So simple, no stress and more importantly, a level caravan!
