We did it! We crossed the Nullarbor travelling in our caravan with our family. The road, the myth, the legend! You know what? It’s nothing like you would expect. We headed off from the Eyre Peninsula holding our breath.
Coming from Victoria, with little experience of caravan travel, we have only ever heard tales of the Nullarbor passed down from generations ago. How tough it is, how boring. How you need to carry gallons of extra food, fuel and water if you were to have any hope to survive. In the end? It was as close as an experience as driving down the Princes Highway in regional Victoria!
Except, WOW, what sights to see and things to do. It really is diverse and spectacular.
We stayed at some epic campsites. We were perched high on the edge of Australia, looking out over the waters of Antartica. We played in massive sand dunes, explored caves and wandered flat expansive plains.
We played Golf along the way, at least a modified version. We played Car Cricket, spotted undie trees, christmas trees, shirt tress and so much more. We discovered space junk, ate the best chips we have EVER eaten and even gave back to the Nullarbor with our own little contribution to one of the sights to see.
If you’re planning your lap of Australia, don’t stress the Nullarbor. It is fantastic, throughly enjoyable and there is food and water every 200 to 300kms. You’re not alone, our massive Car Cricket scores are a testimate to that. We passed cars regularly, trucks a lot, many caravans and even an odd guy on a bicycle. Who does that? Hope they made it. You will, and you will love every second of it.
Our stops along the Nullarbor:
We got through with our original water supply, filled at Ceduna. We didn’t empty the toilet casssette until we reached Norseman. You can achieve this by using showers and toilets at roadhouses every second day. Good luck with your own adventure!
