Our first visit to Daydream Island was in 2011, prior to the birth of our third son, Harry. Following the cyclone that caused extensive damage to the island, and subsequent extensive renovations, we just had to return to check out the improvements and once again enjoy a great holiday. Whilst visiting Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, we had the perfect opportunity to duck over for a stay.
Daydream Island is such a great destination for a family holiday. We scored a family package including ‘kids eat free’. We all loved starting our days with a huge buffet breakfast, followed by a day enjoying activities across the island.
There is a huge selection of activities on the island, including many water sports.
Our boys are water lovers, and will jump in a pool whenever they have the opportunity. We spent many hours swimming as a family, and whilst the boys continued in the pool, we were able to relax in the daybeds, even sneaking the occasional cocktail! For some adult time, the swim up bar was the perfect place to chat whilst still watching the boys in the next pool.
The boys swam and whilst the parents relaxed by the pool. A perfect family holiday!
There are a stack of water activities included in the resort package. We booked in to have a go on the SUPs (stand up paddleboards), however upon arrival we realized we had accidently booked in to take out a catamaran! Having never sailed before, we headed out, not sure if we would return! Our accidental booking turned into a fun morning with many laughs…except Harry, who wasn’t so keen.
We borrowed some stinger suits and snorkel gear from the beach hut (all free of charge) and headed to Lover’s Cove for some snorkeling. Unfortunately, the cyclone damaged the coral in the area, and much of it has died off. There are still some beautiful fish to see, and the marine staff are actively participating in efforts to rejuvenate the reef, although this is a very slow process that will take many years.
The Living Reef is magnificent. It is a great area to experience life under the sea.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 nights stay, and felt very spoilt with the delicious food and many activities to keep our boys entertained. Our boys have plans to return in another 7 years!
